Who we are

Hand is the symbol of human progress and civilization, which is closely related to people's daily life. If you lose your hand, life will be inconceivable and hand dysfunction will seriously affect your quality of life. The human hand has many joints with great range of motion. Under the precise control of from the brain, spinal cord and nerve, the human hand can perform various complex and delicate movements. Once hand dysfunction occurs, the recovery of hand function will be of great difficulty. At present, the rehabilitation of hand function has become one of the most difficult clinical problems.

With the development of rehabilitation medicine in China, different clinical departments and patients gradually pay more and more attention to rehabilitation. In many tertiary hospitals, rehabilitation has infiltrated into neurosurgery departments, orthopedics departments and other related departments. However, when we entered the wards, we find that many patients with paraplegia and hemiplegia suffer from tendon contracture, joint stiffness and so on due to the lack of proper positioning of limbs. In the long term, lack good management of limb position can cause great difficulties for the later rehabilitation outcomes. In 2007, under the background of lack of rehabilitation treatment equipment, unfavorable rehabilitation treatment guidance and insufficient rehabilitation practitioners, the 863 Project-"Research and Development of New Technologies for Rehabilitation Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases" was officially established, and Huashan Rehabilitation Medicine Department initiated the cooperative research mode of "production-learning-research-and-medicine". In 2009, "Research and Development of Integrated Rehabilitation Assistant Devices for Cerebrovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment" formally explored the development of assistant tools to help patients maintain good limb position. For the first time, it was proposed to support and control upper limbs through braces and our team began to pay attention to hand function rehabilitation. Shanghai Donghua University, cooperating with Huashan Hospital Rehabilitation Department and Shanghai Langxin Medical Co., Ltd., lannched the research and development of hand rehabilitation gloves. On March 9, 2011, led by the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Electrophysiology and Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance was established jointly with many hospitals, universities and R&D enterprises in Shanghai. In 2013, the project of "Twelfth Five-Year Plan of Science and Technology Support Project" of the Ministry of Science and Technology-"Clinical Norms and Evaluation Research on Rehabilitation of Hand Dysfunction after Stroke" was established, led by Professor Jia Jie from Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Huashan Hospital. The hand function rehabilitation research group united 10 clinical research bases in Shanghai and other areas in China, and focused on hand function rehabilitation to develop appropriate technical equipment to solve hand dysfunction. The cooperative research mode of "production-learning-research-and-medicine" was carried out through the whole research. In 2014, the 863 project-"Research and Development of New Technologies for Rehabilitation of Paralytic Limb Function and Awakening of Consciousness after Central Injury", led by Professor Xu Wendong, Hand Surgery Department of Huashan Hospital and participated by Professor Jia Jie, Rehabilitation Medicine Department of Huashan Hospital, was initiated. For the first time, the research team combined the surgical treatment with rehabilitation methods to solve hand dysfunction after central nervous system injury. In the meantime, a multidisciplinary team (MDT team) was established. On January 31, 2015, the Hand Function Rehabilitation Professional Committee of Shanghai Electrophysiology and Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance was established. The aim of this alliance was to extend the issue of "hand function" to "upper limb function", and to create a set of solving paths on hand surgery, hand rehabilitation, assistive devices for hand function rehabilitation (development and market promotion) and community and family hand rehabilitation management. The mode of "production-learning-research-and-medicine" was integrated into the intention of the Professional Committee, aiming at promoting the rehabilitation development of hand dysfunction in China in a comprehensive mode, and providing a platform for communication and cooperation for researchers and clinical practitioners in this field. With the expansion of the hand functional rehabilitation professional committee of Shanghai Electrophysiology and Rehabilitation Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance at the beginning of 2016, and the establishment of the Hand Function Rehabilitation Branch of the International Association for the Promotion of Medical and Health Care of China in July 2016, more and more national rehabilitation teams joined us to devote themselves to the development of Hand Function Rehabilitation. Up to now, a total of 52 units in China have joined the Hand Function Rehabilitation National Team, and more and more applicants are applying for jointing us. In addition, the Professional Committee has built a WeChat service platform to share the latest professional knowledge to the public through the Internet promotion.

Hand function rehabilitation has attracted more and more attention from the whole medical industry, and the great work of hand function rehabilitation team has been more and more recognized and supported. The working model of "production-learning-research-and-medicine" has been widely accepted as the development trend of hand function rehabilitation. Under this background, it is time to further promote the new concept and technology of comprehensive rehabilitation of hand function, so that more clinicians and patients can realize the new concept of hand function rehabilitation, and more clinical practitioners can master the latest appropriate technology of hand function rehabilitation, and more social resources can be devoted into this field. All of these efforts should finally benefit all patients with hand function disability, and improve their quality of life in the long term. Therefore, Professor Jia Jie led the hand functional rehabilitation team to prepare and submit the application for the establishment of the professional committee of hand function rehabilitation of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association at the beginning of 2017. The application was formally approved on the First Comprehensive Academic Annual Meeting of The Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association on December 8, 2017.

At present, there are 120 members of the Hand Function Rehabilitation Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association, including one chairman, eight vice-chairmen, 27 standing members,83 members and one secretary. The composition of committee members covers most part of China, including 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities directly under the central government.
